What it is

Xzilon, Inc. sells an appearance protection line through dealers: exterior ceramic coatings, interior protection, glass treatments for the windshield and touchscreens, and protection for wheels, dents and corrosion, sold with a limited warranty. Its claim form covers paint damage such as etching, sap, bird droppings and road salt, interior stains, rips and burns, dents under 3 inches, wheel curb rash, and glass chips and cracks, depending on the plan bought, and supporting materials are due within 30 days of opening a claim. A dealer page says it is applied only through authorized dealerships. In December 2024 the FTC and the State of Illinois sued a Chicago-area dealer group, alleging it required Xzilon on all new and used cars from 2021 and told buyers it was already installed and required; the case came with a proposed $20 million settlement.

What buyers are charged

Can the dealer require it?

The FTC's September 2026 guidance for dealers says an optional add-on can't be presented as required, and that includes saying it is already installed. If a dealer requires it, its price belongs in the advertised price. FTC: Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs (Sep 2026)

Honest take

Can make sense when

  • If you want the kinds of damage its claim form lists (paint staining, interior stains and tears, small dents, curb rash, glass chips), have read the plan's written terms, and the price is one you chose rather than one preloaded on the car.

Worth skipping when

  • If it is presented as already installed and required: the FTC and Illinois alleged that one dealer group did exactly that with Xzilon, and called it deceptive.
  • If you cannot get the warranty's terms in writing before you pay: which damage is covered depends on the plan bought.

What to say at the dealership

  • “Is Xzilon required to buy this car, or can you remove it and its price?”
  • “Which Xzilon plan is this, and can I read the warranty terms before I decide?”
  • “If it's already applied, would you take the charge off, since I didn't ask for it?”

What was the FTC case about Xzilon?
In December 2024 the FTC and the State of Illinois sued a Chicago-area dealer group, alleging it required Xzilon on every car from 2021, told buyers it was already installed, and sometimes charged for add-ons it never applied. The case came with a proposed $20 million settlement, which the FTC called its largest against an auto dealer. These were allegations in a complaint, brought against the dealer group, not against Xzilon, Inc.

Xzilon's claim form lists paint damage from environmental causes, interior stains, rips, tears and burns, dents under 3 inches, wheel curb rash, and glass or touchscreen chips and cracks, depending on the plan bought. Supporting materials are due within 30 days of opening a claim.
