What it is

Auto Butler, founded in 1977, sells a paint protection program through franchised dealers of more than 30 brands. The dealer applies a synthetic polish and then a sealant with Auto Butler's automated polisher, and the owner returns to the dealer every 6 months for a reapplication, up to 9 in all, for the life of the warranty. Optional interior treatments are Fabrigard for fabric and Leathergard for leather. The warranty runs 3 or 5 years from the purchase date and covers environmental damage such as tree sap, bird droppings, fading and oxidation; Auto Butler's FAQ says it does not cover chips or scratches. A transfer to a new owner carries a $30 fee. The company's dealer program sheet says the polisher is provided to the dealer at no cost and lists the polish at $50 and the sealant at $200 per gallon.

What buyers are charged

Can the dealer require it?

The FTC's September 2026 guidance for dealers says an optional add-on can't be presented as required, and that includes saying it is already installed. If a dealer requires it, its price belongs in the advertised price. FTC: Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs (Sep 2026)

Honest take

Can make sense when

  • If you will return to the dealer every 6 months for the reapplications, since that is how the program works, and the damage you worry about is environmental (sap, droppings, fading) rather than chips or scratches.

Worth skipping when

  • If chips and scratches are your main worry: Auto Butler's FAQ says the warranty does not cover them.
  • If you won't be near the selling dealer for twice-yearly visits, since the reapplications are done there.
  • If the price is $995 and another dealer sells the same 5-year program for less, as one dealer page lists at $599.

What to say at the dealership

  • “Is Auto Butler required to buy this car, or can you remove it and its price?”
  • “Has it already been applied to this car, and if so, would you take the charge off since I didn't ask for it?”
  • “Can I read the warranty terms, including what it doesn't cover and whether I can cancel?”
