What it is
A hydrophobic coating on the glass that makes water bead and run off. Dealers apply it and some sell it with a warranty, which may cover only the coating's water repellency or may add chip and crack repair. Read what the line on your addendum says it covers.
Crystal Fusion
Crystal Fusion Technologies, founded in 2007 and acquired by APCO Holdings in May 2024, makes a hydrophobic windshield and glass coating applied by authorized dealers and sold through more than 1,000 auto, RV and boat dealers. One published Chevrolet dealer addendum describes its 5-year treatment as warranted to stay water repellent for 5 years. A 2016 Crystal Fusion windshield repair brochure, which may be out of date, named a separate warranty that repairs chips, stars and small cracks with no deductible and requires the repair shop to get pre-authorization first. One buyer reports paying $1,325 for 5 years, which the dealer said included windshield replacement for rock cracks. For comparison, one retailer lists a 7-ounce bottle of Rain-X glass water repellent, a different product with no warranty, at $4.29.

Can the dealer require it?
The FTC's September 2026 guidance for dealers says an optional add-on can't be presented as required, and that includes saying it is already installed. If a dealer requires it, its price belongs in the advertised price. FTC: Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs (Sep 2026)

Honest take
Can make sense when
- If the warranty covers chip and crack repair you would use, and you have read which of those the line on your addendum includes.
Worth skipping when
- If it covers only water repellency, which a retail glass treatment also gives for a few dollars, though without a warranty.
Crystal Fusion
Can make sense when
- If the warranty on your addendum includes chip and crack repair or replacement in writing and the price reflects that; one buyer reports paying $1,325 for 5 years that the dealer said included replacement.
Worth skipping when
- If the line promises only that the glass stays water repellent, since a retail glass treatment gives water repellency for a few dollars, though without a warranty.
- If you cannot get the warranty's claim rules in writing before you pay, such as whether a repair needs pre-authorization.
What to say at the dealership
- “Is the windshield coating required to buy this car, or can you remove it and its price?”
- “Does this warranty cover chip and crack repair or replacement, or only water repellency?”
- “Can I read the claim rules before I decide, including any reporting deadline?”
