What it is
The car's 17-character VIN, or a registered code, is etched into the windshield and windows so stolen glass and the car itself are harder to resell. Consumer Reports notes every new car already carries its VIN in several places, including under the hood and in the doorjambs. Dealers often sell the etch with a theft limited warranty from a third-party administrator. In one such contract, the benefit is paid to the selling dealer toward a replacement car bought or leased there, only if the car is stolen and not recovered within 30 days or recovered and declared a total loss, and it excludes thefts where the keys were left in the car or the theft was not reported to police within 24 hours. "Vehicle Theft Registration" (VTR) lines are usually an etch package, but on some paperwork "VTR" can mean real government title and registration charges, so ask for the line to be itemized.

Can the dealer require it?
The FTC's September 2026 guidance for dealers says an optional add-on can't be presented as required, and that includes saying it is already installed. If a dealer requires it, its price belongs in the advertised price. FTC: Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs (Sep 2026)
How it's installed: by the dealer. Connecticut General Statutes, chapter 246 (sec. 14-99h, VIN etching offered at sale)
Honest take
Can make sense when
- If you live in New York or Louisiana, your insurer must discount the comprehensive part of your premium for etched glass that meets the state's requirements (in New York: the windshield, door glass and rear window, among others, with the full VIN in characters 1/8 to 1/3 inch, etched permanently). Check that a $10 to $30 kit meets them before counting on the discount.
Worth skipping when
- If the dealer price is $200 or more: Consumer Reports puts a do-it-yourself kit at $10 to $30.
- If you are counting on it to identify the car: Consumer Reports notes the VIN is already stamped in several places on every new car.
- If it comes bundled with a theft warranty you would not use: in one administrator's contract the benefit goes to the selling dealer toward a replacement car bought there, and "No refund will be due" if you cancel.
- If your state does not require the insurance discount: Florida allows insurers to give one but does not require it, so ask your insurer before counting on savings.
What to say at the dealership
- “Is the VIN etching required to buy this car, or can you remove it and its price?”
- “If the glass is already etched, would you take the charge off, since I didn't ask for it?”
- “Is this line a government fee or a dealer product? Can you itemize it for me?”
Frequently asked questions
- Is VIN etching required?
- No source we read makes it a condition of buying the car. Connecticut law requires dealers to offer etching as an optional service, allows pre-etched inventory only if the charge is listed separately, and bars charging more than the rate schedule the dealer files with the DMV. The etch warranty forms we read say buying one is not required to buy or finance the car. New York and Louisiana require insurers to discount qualifying etched glass; neither requires etching itself.
- Does VIN etching lower car insurance?
- In New York, Insurance Law 2336(f) requires a comprehensive discount for etched glass that meets its rules (the windshield, door glass and rear window, among others, with the full VIN in characters 1/8 to 1/3 inch, etched permanently); GEICO's New York rate filing gives 5% off the comprehensive premium. Louisiana R.S. 22:1457(C) requires an actuarially justified discount when the VIN is etched into all windows, but sets no figure. Florida allows insurers to offer one but does not require it. The discount applies only to the comprehensive part of the premium.
- How much should VIN etching cost?
- Consumer Reports puts the dealer charge at $200 to $300 and a do-it-yourself kit at $10 to $30. On quotes buyers have shared with us, we have seen it at $299 and $695.
- What is VTR, vehicle theft registration, on a car quote?
- It is usually a window etch package: an ID number engraved on the glass and registered in a database, often sold with a theft limited warranty. On some paperwork, though, VTR can mean the real government title and registration bundle, so ask the dealership to itemize the line before you decide.
- Can I cancel VIN etching and get a refund?
- It depends on the contract. One administrator's etch limited warranty lets you cancel at any time in writing, but says no refund will be due. Read your own contract's cancellation section before you sign.
