Toyota 30,000-mile service: what's actually required

From Toyota's own maintenance schedule for the 2023 Camry (2.5L four-cylinder), normal driving. Other models and engines are close but not identical, so check your own owner's manual before you agree to a package.

What the schedule calls for

  • Engine oil and filter
  • Tire rotation
  • Engine air filter
  • Cabin air filter

Inspect only

  • All fluid levels, including brake fluid and coolant
  • Brake pads, discs and lines
  • Ball joints, steering linkage and drive shaft boots
  • Exhaust and fuel lines
  • Transmission for leaks

How Toyota schedules maintenance

Toyota publishes a fixed schedule in 5,000-mile steps. Oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months with the specified synthetic oil (every 5,000 miles or 6 months otherwise, or under special operating conditions), and tire rotation every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

  • Spark plugs: 120,000 miles on the four-cylinder (60,000 and 120,000 on the V6).
  • Coolant: First at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months.
  • Brake fluid: No replacement interval; the level and condition are inspected.
  • Transmission fluid: No replacement on the normal schedule; the transmission is inspected for leaks.
  • Engine air filter: Every 30,000 miles or 36 months.
  • Cabin air filter: Every 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Not required under normal driving

  • Transmission fluid replacement (only under special conditions such as towing or extensive idling: 60,000 and 120,000 miles)
  • Fuel system or fuel injector cleaning (not in the schedule; an EFI tank additive is listed only for Hawaii, Puerto Rico and American Samoa)

What dealers commonly add at 30,000 miles

None of these is on Toyota's mileage list for this point. Some, like brake fluid and coolant, also have a time limit (see the intervals above), so check your car's age too. Otherwise, ask why before you pay for them.

Do I have to get the 30,000-mile service at a Toyota dealer to keep my warranty?
No. The FTC says you don't have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect, and it's illegal for a dealer to deny coverage because someone else did the routine maintenance. Keep the receipts showing it was done on schedule.
